TA100 Breaking the 1000 points barrier!

I don’t know if it was because of valentine’s day, but the TA100 index broke the 1000 barrier. TA25 is not that far behind with 992 points. Always fun to see the comments from the media though.

Already there are talks about how this level is inflated and how the investors will surely sell now and take away their profits. I think they are just upset because ALL of them did not expect this to happen.

Will the TA25 go to 1000?

Well today TA25, or as I call it the poor man’s S&P 500, closed at 973 and seems to be climbing steadily towards the 1000 mark. This is not too bad considering the fact that less than 1 year ago we were at war. This is proof to all doomsday scenario guys who always wait for the market crash to say “I told you it was going to crash! 1000 is too much!”.

It always bothers me when people say that 1000 is too high or for that matter that any number is too high. They never tell you exactly why the number is too high and always remind you about the threats that we have from our arab neighbors. If 1000 is too high then what is too low? Well I don’t actually recall someone saying when the TA25 was going down towards the 600 mark saying it was too low. I think most thought it was going to crash all the way down.

Those are the same guys that got out when TA25 got down to around 700 in the war and missed all the rally back up to where we are today!

So for the general layman, don’t try to time the market.

TASE in Israeli T.V

I am sure you all saw (for those who live in Israel) the commercials trying to promote Israelis to invest in the Stock Market. For those who have not seen it, the setting is of a support group where people confess about their ignorance with the stock market. You can watch the video clip in here.

To be cynical I would say the investors are out of dumb money so who better not to supply it than an ignorant crowed? It is true that the site offers a glossary and a little bit of explanation about the stock market. But I did not see things I would expect to see in a website like this.

Firstly, I think most of the Israeli public does not invest in TASE because they are not aware that TASE on average since 1992, returned more than any other risk free investment. Don’t ask me how much exactly because the site does not offer such a statistic sadly.

Secondly, I think the public looks at investing in the stock market as too much of a hassle that they would not bother with in the first place. I would put more emphasis on index funds which is a great tool for those of us who do not want to bother with actively investing.

Thirdly, I would like to see more statitics and comparison between the different investment options. Lately there are a lot of commercials from investment companies but I am not sure if there is a site comparing the returns of all the performances of those companies against the index.
